Michael Gahler is a Member of the European Parliament for Germany, sitting in the European People's Party (EPP), the centre-right group, and belonging to the Christlich Demokratische Union Deutschlands. Before joining the Parliament, Gahler worked as FO desk officer for Baltic and Northern States and the Council of Baltic Sea States (1995–1999) and served as City councillor, Hattersheim am Main (1986–1989). Gahler was also Chair, CDU Hessen Regional Committee on European Policy (2005–2014). In earlier parliamentary terms, the 4th to 9th, the posts held include Vice-Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (2007–2009) and Chair of the Delegation for relations with the Pan-African Parliament (2009–2014 and 2014–2019).
